- Be part of the friendly atmosphere and culture.
- Remember that you are here to learn.
- Treat everyone with humility and respect.
- Good sportsmanship must be observed with all activities.
- Respect for coaches, members, officials and guests are essential.
- Learning takes time and a lot of patience, practice and motivation.
- Avoid skipping training. Discipline goes a long way.
- It is perfectly okay if you are not in shape.
- Many make the mistake of spending time trying to get in shape before training.
- Stop delaying and get in shape by training!
PERSONAL HYGIENE/SAFETY
- Keep yourself clean.
- Trim your finger and toe nails to avoid scratches.
- Remove jewellery, watches, glasses, and such items before training.
- All gears (shirts/pants/shorts/rash guards/gi's) must be clean.
- Make sure to drink enough water.
- Cover any open cuts.
- Do not train if you have an infection or contagious illness.
- It is highly recommended that you take a shower right after training to avoid any skin infections.
DRILLING
- Drill and pay attention.
- Practice more! Do not get lazy! Drill everything into your memory.
- Drilling is training. Resistance must be kept at a rate where both of you can learn.
- Start slow and increase resistance accordingly.
- Do not practice techniques that are not being taught.
SPARRING IN BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU (BJJ)
- No sparring allowed unless instructed.
- Fist bump/shake hands with your partner before sparring.
- Always practice .
- Sparring is NOT about winning or losing, but learning.
- Takedowns and throws are only allowed with the coach's approval. Extra care has to be taken.
- Be mindful of fellow training partners around, watch out for others to avoid bumping into one another.
- Do not "spaz out" and attempt to use brute force. Spazzing refers to unnecessary flailing and exploding.
- Sparring is NOT competition.
- Technique over brute strength. Even if you manage to escape or get a submission by force, you are not learning.
- If you are caught in a submission hold or that you are in pain, TAP (more than 3 times) on your partner.
- Tapping on your partner instead of the mats ensures that your partner is aware of your taps.
- You can also say "TAP" or "STOP".
- You stop immediately when your partner submits via tapping or verbally.
- Never let ego get in the way. Tap when you are caught.
- Do not get angry if someone taps you out. Everyone taps.
- If both of you agree to go light, make sure that you do go light and easy.
- You win nothing even if you are to tap a "higher skilled" partner out. He/she most probably went light on you anyway.
- Your skills are judged based on your understanding and application, not who you tapped out.
Inappropriate behavior such as repeated safety violations, aggression towards fellow students, refusal to follow instructions, bullying, etc will not be tolerated. Student may be removed and banned from the club.
