BJJ first broke into the mainstream in 1993 when BJJ expert, Royce Gracie entered the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and defeated 3 significantly larger opponents in one night with Jiu-jitsu techniques. The martial arts world was changed forever, as the importance of ground fighting is now proven and undeniably effectual.
In BJJ, one is trained in takedowns, throws, pins, arm locks, leg locks, chokeholds and various other submission maneuvers. There are generally no striking in BJJ training or competition, however it is one of the most important foundations that are required in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition.
