Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a martial sport that allows both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground. Striking mainly refers to punches, kicks, elbows, knees, etc. Grappling, on the other hand, involves submission holds, wrestling, clinching and throws.
MMA begun as a means to find out what really works in a real life unarmed combat competition. In the beginning, martial art styles went up against one another but it did not take long for martial artists to realize that the most realistically effective method is to combine the practical and useful elements of different martial arts. Just as martial arts legend, Bruce Lee believed, that the perfect style was no style and that one should pick up what actually works and discard the rest.
Early modern MMA competition took shape in Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the 1900s. The sport of MMA was taken to the next stage worldwide with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) by the Gracie family in 1993. The sport today has gained international exposure and widespread popularity that rivals other sports such as boxing and kickboxing.
